Amazon Inkaterra Lodge
3D / 2N
The Inkaterra lodge is located on the banks of the Madre de Dios River. Inkaterra was a pioneer in ecotourism and has remained a leader in creating a comfortable and natural environment for observing and interacting with the Amazon ecosystem. The lodge is situated in a vast private reserve surrounded by the Amazon rainforest. The rustic cabañas allow you to experience the Amazon nights with the light of only candles and lanterns. But otherwise the comforts don’t detract from the experience.
Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival Inkaterra Lodge
We will be there to greet you at the Puerto Maldonado airport before making the 10 minute drive to our Amazon headquarters where you will be briefed and given the opportunity to securely store your heavy trip luggage. Because of the size and capacity of the river boats, we ask that you only carry the minimum necessary in a duffle bag or backpack. Before boarding the boat you will have the opportunity to visit the Inkaterra Butterfly House. In the Butterfly house you will see many of the over 3,700 varieties of butterflies that live in Peru. Your Amazon adventure begins with a 45 minute boat ride on the Madre de Dios River. Arriving at the lodge, you will be briefed on safety and logistics before settling into your private cabaña.
The Inkaterra lodge offers 14 different excursions to choose from. The first afternoon, we recommend a short guided hike into the Inkaterra Reserve, a natural area where you can experience your first up-close view of the forest environment. The trail is an excellent opportunity for bird watching, viewing the fauna and observing the habits of the jungle insects. Later we recommend a Twilight River excursion. This is an early evening boat ride on the Madre de Dios river as the nocturnal wildlife emerges to begin their nightly activities. With luck you may have the opportunity to spot owls, capibaras and possibly a caiman. After dinner there will be plenty of time to take in the evening sounds and smells unique to the Amazon jungle. In the Eco lodge there are daily nature presentations that give you an opportunity to recap your experiences and put them in perspective and context.

Day 2: Inkaterra Lodge
Inkaterra offers you the flexibility to program and personalize your own Amazon experience. For the early starters who want to be in the wild for an Amazon sunrise, breakfast begins at 5:30. For the leisurely, there is a full breakfast buffet from 7 to 9:30 am. The choices range from quarter to full day excursions. The difficulty levels are classified as easy, moderate and difficult.
We recommend a visit to Sandoval Lake which is a scenic oxbow lake that is home to the endangered river otter as well as monkeys, macaws, black caimans and even the rare anaconda. We also recommend the Inkaterra Canopy Walkway and Anaconda Walk. The first tower is a 100 foot scaffold from which you get a panoramic view of the surrounding rainforest. The walkway offers a quarter mile suspension bridge with 8 observation points. From these points you can expect to see monkeys, toucans, woodpeckers and a three toed sloth. The Anaconda Walk is a 200-meter wooden bridge that takes you over the Aguajales swamps. From this vantage point you can observe the hundreds of species of flora and fauna including amphibians, birds, mammals and even serpents.
