Amazon Refugio Lodge

Itinerary

The Refugio Lodge in the Tambopata Reserve is part of a buffer zone within the Tambopata National Reserve. Here you can experience all of the marvels of the Amazon jungle without leaving behind all the modern comforts. All of the lodge’s spacious rooms have comfortable mattresses, mosquito nets, hot water and private bathrooms. You will enjoy all of the amenities, yet you are within one of the most pristine Amazon reserves in the world. Each room has one open wall exposed to the jungle where it is not uncommon to see a variety of monkeys and parrots right from your room.

The organized outings include walking excursions to explore the flora and fauna of the surrounding jungle. You will have the opportunity spot parrots and macaws as they descend upon the riverside clay licks. You will tour an oxbow lake in a catamaran alongside endangered river otters and the black caiman. You will visit a local farming community where local families harvest Brazil nuts. This type of collaboration ensures that the residents benefit as well from the ecotourism.

Day 1: Arrival Refugio Lodge

We will be there to greet you at the Puerto Maldonado airport. From there, you will make the 10-minute drive to our Amazon headquarters where you will be briefed and given the opportunity to store your heavy trip luggage. Because of the size and capacity of the river boats, we ask that you only carry the minimum necessary in a duffle bag or backpack.

Next you will transfer by bus approximately 45 minutes to the departure dock. Here you will board the river boat for the two and a half hour boat ride up the Tambopata River to the Refugio Lodge. The dock resides within the Native Community of Infierno. During the trip you will be treated to a box lunch where you will get your first taste of the wonderful jungle flavors. Upon arrival, you will be greeted by the lodge staff and offered a welcome fruit beverage and a wet towel. You will also receive important safety and logistical information.
After dinner you will begin your first adventure, a caiman search. The red eyes of the timid caimans can be spotted riverside after dark by scanning the shore with headlamps and flashlights.

Your guide will explain the origins of the oxbow lakes as you begin a catamaran tour of the far shores. During this tour, you will view the endangered river otters that live and play in the waters. With a little luck, you will be able to spot a black caiman circling around but unable to approach the otters.

Later you will hike about 30 minutes from the lodge to the Canopy Tower. The Canopy is a 25 meter scaffolding tower that gives you a panoramic view of the Tambopata River basin. During the hike, you will see many of the thousands of varieties of plants, trees and insects that reside in the jungle. With a little luck, you may be able to spot a monkey or a parrot.

After the buffet lunch you will have time to rest. After the break, you will head downstream to visit one of the local communities where you will have a chance to see up close life in the rainforest and participate in local customs and traditions.
